Overview

Like most rural California counties, Butte has struggled for years with overcrowded and outdated municipal court facilities. When precious capital funds were finally allocated, they were eclipsed by spiraling demands. Our charge was to make the most potent use of a limited expansion budget.

We achieved this through innovative design, cost-effective materials and by introducing new computer-based record and document handling systems in the courtroom. Linked computers at the bench, clerk and recorder greatly simplify filing and retrieval functions for four new courtrooms, reducing space needs.

Site-cast concrete construction systems proved very cost effective, while careful detailing helps project judicial strength, formality and long-term value. This design solution was very economical for the County and has resulted in a high-quality courthouse that will serve well for many years to come.
