The Health Plan of San Joaquin (HPSJ) is a “home-grown” nonprofit, managed-care health plan that was founded to meet the needs of a diverse range of clients in and around San Joaquin County. A decade of rapid growth to more than 80,000 clients and 120 employees led to the decision to create a consolidated office. A site was selected adjacent to San Joaquin County Hospital, and we went to work creating a distinctive headquarters building.
Public outreach and health education are cornerstones of the HPSJ program, so we created a rich array of community resources. The new Community Room seats 200 people lecture style and can be configured for training, presentations, and even banquets. This room allows for consolidated on-site meetings for over 120 employees and 160 health providers. “We could even hold a mini health fair here,” said Spokesman David Hurst.
The project provides office space; meeting, training, and community rooms; computer and telecommunications support; as well as records and related support spaces. The distinctive sloping roof forms are readily visible from the Interstate just east of the site. The project was completed for less than $240 per square foot; very economical for a class ‘A’ office building.
