Client – University of California, Davis
Location – Sacramento, California
Completion – 2012UC Davis Medical Center Parking Structure III
For the past 10 years, the University of California, Davis (UC Davis) Medical Center in Sacramento has been transforming from a sprawling suburban-like campus to a compact and efficient urban medical center. A key support element in that transformation is structured parking.
Dreyfuss + Blackford was selected along with International Parking Design, Inc., to design a new economical and efficient facility that serves as a graceful addition to campus and a good neighbor to adjacent residents.
Parking Structure III (PS III) is the new front door for patients and family members arriving at UC Davis Medical Center. The 7-level structure adds 1,200 spaces, advanced parking technology, individual parking stall availability indicators and abundant natural light in the interior for safety and security. Suspended over the precast concrete structure, a louvered shade screen veils the building from the street and creates privacy for patient rooms.
With a challenging site in a very prominent location, the new parking structure has become an iconic representation of the campus. The stunning, textured veil covers the façade, casting changing shadows throughout the day. The screen also becomes animated at night with the lights from passing cars, further engaging the building with the street.
PS III has won numerous awards, including a nod as a finalist in the international 2013 Architizer A+ Awards category for Parking Structures.

Client – Vision Service Plan
Location – Sacramento, California
Completion – 2014The Shop at VSP Global
Vision Service Plan (VSP) has moved an innovative think-tank known as “The Shop” into the former Vogel Chevrolet Showroom in midtown Sacramento. This “Miesian Glass Box” was designed in 1959 by Dreyfuss + Blackford and was a startling advance for modernist architecture in Sacramento. VSP was attracted by the sparse simplicity of the space in Midtown – a clean slate for their “Design Thinking” lab. VSP is acting on a bold initiative to address changes in the vision care and vision wear market. The Shop now boasts a space conducive for exploring innovation and incubating new concepts in a cost-effective testing ground.
