Pacific&#8217;s School of Engineering and Computer Science has always believed students learn best by doing. The Fletcher Jones Foundation Makerspace was designed around that conviction, a building that doesn&#8217;t just house the work, but puts it on display.
Before this project, student workspaces and fabrication facilities were spread across seven separate buildings on campus. Getting to equipment, coordinating with a classmate in another discipline, or simply building a shared sense of community, all of it was harder than it needed to be.
The renovation of Building 118 on Pacific&#8217;s South Campus brought those resources together under one roof. The building, a former community college facility with a well-preserved Art Deco facade, was worth keeping. The exterior was restored. The interior was rebuilt from scratch to support the way students actually work: iteratively, collaboratively, and across disciplines.

The central move of the design was to open the building up. Large glazing panels replace opaque wall sections along the main elevations, making the activity inside visible from the campus outside. At night, the lit interior glows against the South Campus like a lantern the work made legible, the building itself a signal that something is being made here. 
 
That transparency carries through the interior as well. Glass partitions between spaces maintain sightlines across the full floor plate. A student in the metal shop can see a peer debugging code twenty feet away. Cross-disciplinary awareness becomes a natural byproduct of simply showing up, the architecture does the work of connecting people that seven separate buildings never could.

The program is organized as a gradient from social to industrial. The Henry and Alice Hirata Welcome Lounge anchors the entry, a high-ceilinged, skylit gathering space with movable furniture that shifts easily from individual work sessions to full department reviews. The structure above is left exposed and painted white, giving the room an honest workshop quality rather than the polished feel of a conventional academic lobby. 
 
Further in, the Professor David Fletcher Resource Center provides a staffed hub for equipment and materials, flanked by digital fabrication areas with FDM and resin 3D printers, CNC machines, and computer workstations. Color and flooring shifts between zones give the open plan a clear spatial hierarchy without resorting to full enclosure. 
 
The machine shop occupies the most industrial end of the building, lit by a continuous skylight running its full length a deliberate choice that transforms a space that typically goes without natural light. Yellow translucent safety curtains at the machining stations provide the required separation while preserving the visual connectivity that defines the facility throughout.

The Fletcher Jones Foundation Makerspace is the realization of a simple but powerful idea, that bringing Pacific's dispersed engineering programs together under one roof would create something greater than the sum of its parts. What was once fragmented across seven buildings now occupies a single, purposefully designed environment where students from different disciplines share tools, space, and ideas every day. This project provided a much-needed renovation of the entire Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula (CHOMP) Outpatient Surgery Center, including new supporting administrative space on the floor below, new rooftop HVAC units, and seismic upgrades to the building.
Our design approach began with an intensive Discovery phase to evaluate the space needs, functional requirements, staff and patient flow, and building system efficacy. In addition to regular stakeholder workshops, we embedded ourselves for three days into the surgery center environment to observe workflows and interview staff. This interaction was vital to our team’s understanding of the most critical renovation needs, which included better acoustic and physical privacy for patients, centralized storage, right-sized spaces, and building systems upgrades.
The remodel includes three operating rooms, three procedure rooms, 12 patient bays, two nurse stations, a scope processing department that serves the adjoining hospital, and new administrative space on the lower level. The new design provides staff visibility into the Pre-Op/PACU patient areas from two centralized nurse stations.
The interiors feature calming blue and green tones with warm wood accents inspired by the Monterey coastline. Clean lines and midcentury modern influence are taken from the existing hospital’s architecture. The new layout preserves the exterior views from the waiting room, operating rooms and PACU bays to the surrounding forest landscape, a beloved feature by staff and visitors.

Solano County’s Department of Child Support Services (DCSS) works together with the public to solve financial, legal and the emotional challenges that come with co-parenting. As a department with a difficult task, creating an environment with a positive workplace strategy helped improve their image and reinvigorated the work culture while delivering a welcoming and comfortable space for their clients.
DCSS’s new location, on the 5th floor of the County Administration Building, introduces an improved workflow for staff including a complete open office floor plan with access to natural daylight and integrated technology designed to enable staff to work from any of the collaborative areas. A training room and various sized meeting rooms provide staff dedicated spaces to collaborate and provide continuous staff training. Private interview rooms deliver space for DCSS to consult with clients on sensitive matters. The waiting room incorporates a large wall-length graphic wallcovering representing a “new horizon” emulating a more sophisticated version of a child’s painting. To help further reinforce the mission of the department and carry the design concept throughout, each of the conference spaces have large photographic wall coverings incorporating images of children and parents. The new DCSS environment gives a “fresh start” for both the DCSS staff and the clients they serve.

An abandoned 1920s brick and terracotta school in Sacramento is now home to several arts groups in the region. To identify the various organizations within, the client wanted new wayfinding and easily changeable tenant- and donor-specific signage inside, with additional ADA, building address, and etiquette signage outside. The project scope included donor signage, gallery blades, tenant-specific signs, directories, courtesy and code required signage, all consistent with the building’s existing code signage and CLARA’s brand, developed after opening.

Blue Diamond Growers (BDG) is the largest almond cooperative, producing over 80 percent of the world’s almond supply. The company has been headquartered in Sacramento since 1910. Construction has finished in three historic buildings on the downtown campus, in effort to provide for staff and changes in working environments. Several amenities are being incorporated into the design to accommodate rapidly changing technology and the need for more versatile spaces. The new renovations also provide improvements to life safety and seismic resistance in each of the buildings.
Diamond ‘G’ Coffee Building 
Two-story brick, Diamond ‘G’ Coffee, is an existing 5,700 SF building on the BDG campus that used to be a coffee roasting plant, and tannery. The design for this quaint little building is clean and simple, as not to detract from the beautiful brick walls and exposed beams inside, with design elements paying homage to almond orchards in the Spring. The renovations will meet the diverse needs of the Campus Operations Department.
Main Office Building 
In this iconic Art Deco-style, 26,600 SF building, we completely reworked the first and second floor plans and room layouts, created much more open office space with adjacent break out/touchdown rooms and created larger conference rooms, with fewer private offices to make space for their new staff in several different departments. Parts of this building had recently been updated with new finishes and glazing systems at the conference and meeting rooms. The finishes selected and applied during the last renovation provided our inspiration for executive-style spaces. Additionally, we added a new café/breakroom and multiple coffee bars and lounge spaces throughout. New finishes include paint, carpet, LVT (luxury vinyl tile), casework, quartz counters, and restroom finishes. Custom art for privacy glass, and other collaborative spaces was also included.
Blue Diamond Building 
At the front entrance to the BDG Headquarters is the historic 11,000 SF brick Blue Diamond Building. It is the largest office building on campus and currently houses the Nut &#038; Gift Shop and several administrative offices where the Information Technology department is making the first floor of this building their new home. The new look for the space is open and bright, with bold colors, and an overall modern, tech design aesthetic. New spaces were created to accommodate the different ways in which people work include hoteling stations, lounges and an open office environment.

UC Santa Cruz Quarry Amphiteater

The Upper Quarry Amphitheater at UC Santa Cruz was designed in the mid-1960s by landscape architect Robert Royston inside of a natural stone quarry on campus. Graduations, protests, lectures and concerts were held in this 2,000 seat amphitheater until it deteriorated to the point it could no longer be safely used. Both a renovation and a rehabilitation, the project upgraded the venue to include accessible seating and better access for all patrons. The project scope also included rock-slope stabilization, safety fencing, improved emergency vehicle access, on-site stormwater treatment, regular and emergency power, and site lighting. Supporting the overwhelming request of the students, Wi-Fi was installed to serve over 2,000 simultaneous connections for streaming of live events.
The site now includes one additional row of seating, maintaining the original asymmetrical seat layout as closely as possible. Materials used represent the original design with revisions to improve long-term durability and maintenance. Stairs were also reconstructed in their original locations. The Upper Quarry Amphitheater is a historical resource under CEQA, and as such all modifications were sympathetic to the original design to not diminish the amphitheater’s historic integrity.
The project was featured in Landscape Architecture Magazine&#8217;s, January 2020 issue. It received a Special Mention from the jury of the 2020 Architizer A+Awards in the Architecture +Landscape category and was also chosen as a finalist in the Architecture +Preservation category.

We completed design and construction administration services to repurpose former dental hygiene instruction spaces in the Chan Family Health Sciences Learning Center and Clinics building on the University of the Pacific campus. The main goal of the project was expansion of instructional spaces and providing comfortable student study and lounge areas for better learning, patient care and recruitment of highly-qualified students. The building now houses facilities for the Pharmacy School with state-of-the-art lecture classrooms, clinics, faculty offices, and bright, open study spaces for students. In addition, the project expands tele-health teaching, research and services for student health practitioners to reach more Veterans Affairs patients.

Turlock Irrigation District Control Center

Turlock Irrigation District (TID) is responsible for the management, maintenance, and reliability of a complex electrical and irrigation water distribution network that includes reservoirs, canals, power plants, and transmission lines. For over 40 years, this network has been monitored and operated from a control center located at the District’s corporation yard near downtown Turlock.
Two existing buildings previously occupied by the City of Turlock are now TID’s Power Operations Building and Water Distribution Building.
The Power Control Center in the Power Operation Building is the mission critical component of the project requiring significant renovations, including replacing and raising the roof structure to provide clear span spaces and additional height on the inside for a video display wall. It is surrounded by spaces that support the power control operators who work 12 hour shifts.
The Water Distribution building was given a new open office environment with several small focus rooms for the Water Distribution staff. It houses 18 previously-scattered water distribution operators and managers under one roof for a more collaborative culture, efficient distribution of water, and higher-level of customer service. The building also includes a new Irrigation Control room, updated fitness, break and locker rooms, and new conference rooms.
Both buildings were designed to optimize energy efficiency, conserve resources, and reduce long-term maintenance costs for the District.

Concept renderings created for local developer with plans to revitalize the Mansion Inn at 700 16th Street in Sacramento, a project we designed in 1958.
In its heyday (which lasted almost 30 years), the Mansion Inn was the place to stay and be seen. Politicians, celebrities, performing artists, all stayed here while in town. Frequent events, local art, quality food and garden lounges created the perfect place to retreat.
