Sacramento State University Union Expansion North

California State University, Sacramento
Sacramento, California

This three-story expansion and renovation of the existing University Union provides an amenity-rich addition and a gateway to the heart of the Sacramento State campus. The 71,000 SF north expansion and renovation includes much-needed large meeting and student spaces, and offices for University functions. Delivered using the University’s innovative Collaborative Design-Build method, this LEED Gold-designed project engaged stakeholders in design workshops, ensuring University staff and student expectations were captured.

The design solution gives the University Union an identity with an expansive double height entry pavilion, outdoor student gathering space, and café, activating the pedestrian zone at the expansion’s main entry. A planned quad to the north will provide a new and improved outdoor space for student activity. By creating a permeable and light-filled north face, the project is a beacon for student life.

The expansion’s strong architectural statement is consistent with the “Tree Canopy” theme embraced by the campus Master Plan.

The University Union expansion is being built in a very active area of campus and construction phasing is planned to have the least impact on existing operations.
